SERFs

Are SERFs suitable for cold conditions?

Yes, self-engaging reclosable fasteners (SERFs) perform well in cold environments. The functional surface (including the individual engagement elements) remains stable and engaged at temperatures as low as -30 °C (-22 °F).

However, for low-temperature applications, consider the following example factors:

  • Duration of exposure: How long will the fastener be exposed to low temperatures?
  • Static loads: Loads that are non-moving or hanging
  • Dynamic loads: Loads that shift or apply sudden force
  • Shear force: Forces pulling across the fastener’s functional surface, which can be either static or dynamic
  • Engagement/disengagement needs: Does the fastener need to resist disengagement or is it expected to engage and disengage at low temperatures?

Mounting methods for cold environments

For long-term durability, mounting methods should be chosen carefully. Adhesives designed for cold environments are available that offer reliable performance. Clips and extruded profiles, made from materials with similar behaviours to the SERFs, are also effective. Other methods such as sewing or welding may also be suitable, depending on the specific product assembly.
