SERFs

The evolution of SERFs’ performance

Self-engaging reclosable fasteners (SERFs) have been in use since the late 1950s through mid 1960s. Over the decades, advancements in technology and a deeper understanding of material behaviour have led to continuous improvements in SERF performance. Modern SERFs now outperform their predecessors by significant margins, making it essential to consider these advancements when designing products that require such fastening systems.

Not all SERFs are created equal

When evaluating SERFs for your application, keep in mind that:

  • different vendors may offer products with varying performance levels, even within the same product category.
  • performance differences can impact your design decisions, such as the dimensions or total surface area of the engagement elements needed to achieve optimum results.

Achieving better performance-to-cost ratios

Binder’s Duotec® product line includes high-performance SERFs that can deliver significant material efficiency:

  • Up to 50% less fastening material may be required to achieve the same specified forces compared to competitor SERFs.
  • This reduction uncovers new possibilities for optimising your design, including:
    • minimising the amount of fastener material used
    • reevaluating the placement of fastening points for improved performance and cost-effectiveness
