SERFs

Using SERFs in wet environments

Rain, water spray, prolonged exposure to condensation and humidity can all challenge the durability and performance of fastening systems. These issues become even more problematic in environments exposed to seawater or corrosive substances such as pool chlorine. Self-engaging reclosable fasteners (SERFs) offer an ideal solution to address these challenges.

Advantages of SERFs in wet environments:

  • Resistance to oxidation: SERFs are naturally resistant to rust and other forms of degradation.
  • Breathable structures: The fastener structures themselves are generally breathable with air flow around and through the engagement elements.
  • Durable mechanical performance: The engagement elements maintain strong performance even after repeated exposure to water.

Mounting SERFs in wet environments

For long-term durability, it’s essential to choose the right mounting methods. Adhesives designed specifically for prolonged exposure to wet environments are available on the general market. In addition, clips and extruded profiles are made from materials that share similar properties to the SERFs, ensuring consistency in performance. Other methods such as sewing or welding may also be suitable, depending on the specific product assembly.
