Can SERFs be used on window or glass surfaces?

Yes, self-engaging reclosable fasteners (SERFs) can be used effectively on window or glass surfaces. These applications, however, primarily rely on adhesive-based mounting to secure the fastener to the glass. Unlike traditional SERF applications, where the fastener is hidden from view, window and glass installations typically result in the fastener being partially visible from both sides.

Key considerations for glass mounting:

• Visibility: Since the fastener is often visible on both sides, the colour choice becomes important. SERFs are typically available in black and white. Black fasteners blend in better with the mounted product but may absorb more UV energy that raises the temperature of the mount and may potentially stress the adhesive. White fasteners are less likely to absorb UV but may be more noticeable in the application.
• Weight and load types: It’s important to assess the weight of the object being attached to the glass and how the load will be distributed. The temperature exposure/number of temperature cycles can also have a dramatic effect on selection of an appropriate SERF system. For example:
  • Building windows or commercial truck windshields will primarily experience shear forces, with brief hanging loads when the window is opened or during vehicle turning, acceleration and braking.
  • Slanted surfaces, such as a sports car windshield, are subject to multiple shear forces but also add static hanging loads.
  • Sunroofs or panoramic moonroofs are mostly subject to static hanging loads with shear forces mainly from turning, acceleration and braking.

Additional considerations:

The mounting system's design should account for these varying loads to ensure durability and secure attachment. The adhesive and fastener's strength must match the specific application and expected forces.
