TUFFs

Construction: What is a TUFF?

Welcome to the world of touch-activated, ultra-thin film fasteners (TUFFs). Through a series of short articles, Binder will highlight the benefits of using TUFFs in applications where conditions require high shear strength plus a limited number of open/close cycles. These applications include both durable (flooring fixation) and disposable (gown and diaper) uses and typically use a nonwoven fabric or a specially designed loop fabric as a counterpart.

So, what exactly is a TUFF? These products typically feature ‘mushroom-like’ engagement elements formed into a tape. The tape is cut to size and attached to surfaces using methods such as glueing, welding or sewing. When such a tape comes in contact with the counterpart material, the engagement elements interlock with the loops or free connected filament lengths and hold the surfaces securely in place under shear force (i.e. two parallel surfaces sliding against one another).

But what if you need to adjust, repair or temporarily remove a surface? No problem! Simply apply enough force to disengage (peel) the TUFF. Once your task is complete, you can reattach the surfaces using the same fastener. These simple attributes make TUFFs a practical and reusable alternative to traditional glues and adhesive tapes, reducing both waste and complexity.

Stay tuned as we take a closer look at how these innovative fasteners can simplify your projects.
