TUFFs

Structures and styles of TUFFs

TUFFs are available in a variety of structures and styles, but all are formed using extruded film technology. This technology applies a continuous stream of molten thermoplastic material onto a forming surface. Through a highly controlled process, the resulting film has functional engagement elements durably formed with and integrated into the resulting film tape.

How engagement elements are designed

The forming surface is designed such that the resulting engagement elements have a specific defined geometry. The geometry includes the profile of each engagement element as well as the distance (or ‘pitch’) between those elements. By specifically controlling the fastener geometry, it is possible to achieve distinct advantages when the fasteners are combined in a fastening or closure system:

  •  Denier compatibility: tuned performance relative to the diameter of the fibres and/or filaments in the opposing engagement surface and how that fibrous material ‘packs’ into the engagement element.
  • Compositional compatibility: optimising the engagement behaviour when there are differing fibrous materials in the engagement surface, such as found in blends (e.g. natural with synthetic) and layering (e.g. SMS).
  • Mixed flexural response: design accommodates engagement surfaces that are comprised of fibrous materials that have differing elongation and tensile strength attributes.
  • Free segment engagement: engagement surfaces provide for the ability of an engagement element to ‘grab’ the fibrous material, similar to how a woven loop material interacts with a cut hook, which requires balancing available loop-equivalents (free segment lengths) with the desired peel and shear performance
