Binder’s self-engaging reclosable fastener for headliner-to-body assembly
China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) industry is experiencing rapid growth as more and more high-tech companies leverage their technological know-how to enter automotive manufacturing. With our proven fastening solutions, Binder provided key technical support for a globally renowned Chinese company for electronics, launching their first purely electric vehicle.
Our self-engaging reclosable fastener (=SERF) Duotec® was used for the headliner-to-body assembly, enabling the customer to successfully progress from design to series production.
The challenge: a reliable fastening solution without using primer
As a high-tech company entering automotive manufacturing for the first time, achieving reliable series production within a short timeframe was a key focus at the beginning of the project. Hence, our customer set very high requirements for product quality stability, structural reliability and assembly efficiency. For the connection between the headliner and the car body, our customer was looking for a fastening solution that could be bonded directly to the body without primer, ensuring secure fixation while simplifying the installation process and increasing production efficiency.
Our solution: self-engaging reclosable fastener (SERF) Duotec®
To meet these requirements, we recommended our SERF Duotec®. This fastener provides a simple method for durably mounting one component to another, allows for removal and reattachment of the fastener without the need for special tools, and is specifically designed to provide clear feedback to a user that the fastener has successfully locked together.
Combined with a high-performance adhesive, specifically developed for this type of application, this fastener can be bonded directly to the car body without primer, significantly simplifying the headliner-to-body assembly process. At the same time, this solution offers strong tensile disengagement strength, ensuring a highly reliable connection for interior components such as headliners. As a result, we were able to satisfy our customer’s requirements for both efficiency and quality in series production.

The design engineers were already familiar with Binder’s fastening solutions and Binder fastening systems were shortlisted as one of the preferred solutions for the headliner-to-body connection at a very early stage of the project.
During a solution presentation, our expert in automotive fastening solutions demonstrated the performance of Duotec® with a simple yet impressive real-life experiment: two Duotec® fasteners only 12.5 mm × 30 mm in size were able to securely hold two 5 kg bags each when engaged, maintaining a firm connection at all times. This highlighted the high tensile strength and reliability of our SERF Duotec®.

Beyond supplying the fastening solution, the Binder team also delivered on-site training and technical support to ensure stable and consistent implementation of the fastening process during both pilot builds and series production.
Ongoing cooperation: from a single model to series application
Within less than two years, the first and second car models using our fastening systems were successfully launched and have achieved strong market performance. According to the customer, the upcoming third model, scheduled for market launch this year, will also continue to use our self-engaging reclosable fastening solutions.
