The performance of your TUFF system depends not only on the fastener itself, but also on how well it is attached to the surface you want to connect or close. Given that TUFFs use an essentially homogeneous thermoplastic construction during the manufacturing process, these materials can be ultrasonically welded, glued or sewn into place.
Ultrasonic welding, including Binder’s own in-line welding technology, is a low-complexity solution for quickly attaching the TUFF to a suitable surface without adding other components and costs. Sewing the TUFF to a surface is also an appropriate approach, especially where the surface is pliable and not suitable for welding or chemical attachment.
The use of glues or adhesives introduces further considerations. If an adhesive’s retention force is weaker than the fastener’s peel strength, failures can result in loss of the whole assembly—turning your carefully designed TUFF into little more than an overly complicated double-sided adhesive tape.
Selecting the right glue or adhesive for your fastener tape is critical to ensure that the engagement elements function as intended. Several factors influence adhesive selection:
Environmental effects:
Surface characteristics:
Fastener orientation and loading:
A mismatch between the adhesive and these variables can compromise the system’s performance under real-world conditions.
Binder offers a variety of adhesive options tailored for use with our TUFF products. You can also add your own adhesive of choice to the fastening tapes to meet specific needs.
