SERFs

Adapting SERFs to bridge gaps

Self-engaging reclosable fasteners (SERFs) are highly adaptable for bridging gaps between two surfaces. This adaptability is achieved through various methods that increase the total engagement height of the SERF system.

Methods to increase engagement height

  1. Adjusting the engagement element height
    • The height of the engagement elements can be modified within certain bounds.
    • It is crucial to carefully consider design changes, however, as altering one attribute can sometimes negatively affect other critical performance characteristics.
  2. Enhancing the adhesive layer
    • The adhesive layer thickness can also be adjusted to achieve the desired engagement height.
    • While this method provides flexibility, it has limits compared to modifications made to the engagement elements themselves.
  3. Custom solutions for greater heights
    • For applications requiring even greater height adjustments, Binder collaborates with customers to develop tailored solutions.
    • These may include the use of extruded profiles, clips or other fitments to achieve precise gap-filling characteristics.
